Course description

The greatest challenges of our time, such as climate change and urbanization and its consequences, cannot be solved without multidisciplinary cooperation.

In the program, you will get a deep dive in to the root causes of problems, see phenomena from new perspectives, and learn to understand other perspectives and to find common solutions.

The program is produced in collaboration with the Spatial Planning and Transportation Engineering Research Group of the Department of Built Environment at Aalto University.

Deeply rooted in understanding of the complexities of the important societal challenges reflected in our everyday environments, the research group has both a practice- and science-based approach to engineering as collaborative development.

According to the group, shaping our futures requires a deeper understanding of human behavior and values, urban systems dynamics, citizen participation practices, and inter-sectoral institutional collaboration.

This understanding has been broken down into six thematic modules in the program: Planner Identity, Energy in Urban Planning, Strategic Spatial Planning and Planning Cooperation, Planning Knowledge, Urban and Regional Development, and Housing and Living Environments.

The modules consist of two to three-day long class meetings, with pre- and post-assignments. In addition, the modules are complemented by other common or optional studies, such as an optional six-day study tour to a European country.

With the program, you will gain the latest research-based knowledge as a basis for your solutions, learn from and enlarge your peer network, and deepen your understanding of phenomena affecting our futures.

The program is accepted in the planner qualification procedure. Qualifications can be applied for through FISE Oy.

The program is held in Finnish.

Teaching takes place at Aalto PRO's premises in Helsinki.
