Course description

No longer a buzz word, Design Thinking is becoming a regular way to drive innovation, develop processes, and make strategies. Understanding and involving the customer, prototyping, and testing solutions iteratively are integral parts of the process. In this program, you will start by exploring whether you are actually solving the right problem, only then will you move on to finding the right solution.

Prior to the first session, you are asked to find a current business challenge from your company or organization. Instructors will help you to make sure your topic and scope are right. In the first week, we start by framing and reframing the problem. Following the design thinking process, you will first learn methods for gaining customer understanding and try them out in practice. You then start ideating possible solutions and group and assess your ideas, growing them into concepts. Next you will plan how to prototype, test, and validate your concepts with users and customers. Then, in Week Two, you will learn how to take concepts forward and keep developing them in an agile manner and explore how design thinking can be applied to business model design. The final day focuses on how to implement Design Thinking in your organization.

This program can be accepted as a study module in Aalto MBA and EMBA programs and gives you 4.5 ECTS credits.

The program starts with a kick-off and then the Learning Platform opens. You will start to think about your own business challenge and receive feedback on it. Contact sessions 1–3 (Week One) are delivered at the Aalto EE premises in Helsinki, Finland and sessions 4–6 (Week Two) at the Esade premises in Barcelona, Spain. The weekend is reserved for travel. This gives you an opportunity to see more of one or both cities. The content is supported by a self-paced online course that you can follow during the mornings.

Prepare to spend six intensive days on campus and online. The facetime sessions with instructors and coaches are run in the afternoon (EET), while the mornings are reserved for individual study including online course modules, pre-reading materials, and project tasks.

You may participate onsite or partly or fully online.
